What to Expect From Your First Reiki Session

If you've never experienced Reiki, it's natural to have questions. Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive form of energy healing that works with your body's natural energy systems to promote relaxation, reduce stress, and support emotional and physical balance.

Before Your Session

There's no special preparation required. Wear comfortable clothing — you'll remain fully dressed throughout the session. Avoid heavy meals or caffeine immediately before your appointment. Come with an open mind, but know that you don't need to believe in anything specific for Reiki to be effective.

During the Session

You'll lie comfortably on a massage table in a peaceful, quiet environment. The practitioner will place their hands lightly on or just above various areas of your body. Most people experience deep relaxation, warmth, tingling, or a sense of peace. Some notice emotional shifts, vivid imagery, or simply drift into a restful, meditative state. Every session is unique, and there is no wrong way to experience Reiki.

After Your Session

Many people feel deeply relaxed, clear-headed, or emotionally lighter after a Reiki session. Some experience continued shifts over the following hours or days as the body continues to process and integrate the energy work. Drink plenty of water, rest if you need to, and pay attention to any insights or sensations that arise.

How Often Should You Receive Reiki?

Some people experience significant benefits from a single session. Others find that regular sessions — weekly, biweekly, or monthly — provide cumulative support for stress management, emotional processing, and overall well-being. Your practitioner can help you determine a rhythm that serves your needs.
